Be Focus — How to Against 'Good Enough'

The danger of settling for 'good enough' in AI — why Abel pushes for structural truth over fluent approximation.

The AI industry has conditioned us to accept "good enough." If a model produces coherent text, plausible answers, and reasonable-looking recommendations, we call it a success. The bar keeps lowering: fluency is mistaken for understanding, correlation is mistaken for causation, and statistical approximation is mistaken for structural truth. This drift toward mediocrity isn't accidental — it's the natural outcome of optimizing for surface-level metrics while ignoring what actually matters for decision-making.

When you ask an LLM "Should I take this job?", it doesn't compute an answer. It assembles one from patterns in its training data — what people have said in similar contexts. The output is fluent. It may even sound insightful. But it has no access to your causal structure: your skills, your constraints, your counterfactual alternatives. The model is approximating "what good advice sounds like," not "what good advice is." That's the difference between fluency and truth.

Abel exists because structural truth is not negotiable. Every decision that matters — investments, career moves, policy choices — has cause-effect chains beneath it. Fluent approximation tells you what to say. Structural truth tells you what happens when you act. Abel builds directed causal graphs from real-world data, applies do-calculus for interventions, and produces answers grounded in the actual mechanics of cause and effect. The output may be less fluent than an LLM's. It is, by design, more faithful to reality.

Settling for "good enough" in AI has dollar consequences. A recommendation system that correlates user behavior without modeling intent will miss regime shifts. A trading strategy that fits past correlations will blow up when the causal structure changes. A policy simulator that approximates outcomes will fail when you need to intervene. The cost of fluency is hidden until it isn't — and by then, the damage is done.

The antidote is focus: focus on the causal structure, focus on propagation delays, focus on intervention semantics. Abel doesn't try to do everything. It does one thing — causal computation — and does it correctly. Against a culture of "good enough," that focus is the difference between systems that perform under stress and systems that collapse when reality deviates from the training distribution.
